RARA-AVIS: Yasmina Khadra - translated in English

Last year I informed here about Yasmina Khadra, an Algerian writer. His first HB/noir "Morituri" was recently published by Toby Press, in their Toby Crime imprint. "Double Blank" will be issued in March. These two short volumes are the two first novels of a trilogy describing the struggle of "commisaire Llob". The pseudo used by the writer evoked a feminine name, but it's a man
(former high rank officer in the Algerian army) who wrote these noir novels, in French, about a police officer, Brahim Llob, fighting with his limited means corruption and Integrism in a decaying Algeria. It's moving, sometime brutal, very dark and full of irony close to cynicism. In French, the language served admirably the purpose: concise, structured and very efficient.
"Morituri", first published in 1997, is IMHO one of the best noir novels written in French during the last ten years. Strongly recommended.

I did not read the English translations, but IMO it could not lose very much in English (unless a very lousy translator…).

In 2004, Khadra added a fourth part: "La part du mort" (=The Dead Man's Share).
