I've had a chance to read a couple good ones recently:
Ice Harvest by Scott Phillips - This has been praised to the
skies here already, and for good reason. A nasty bit of noir,
best (and easily) read in a single sitting. I found the
ending to be a groaner, but perfect nevertheless. I've got
the next one (The Walkaway, I think) waiting.
One quibble: I love it when a book is set in a specific time
rather than just the generic present. Since Ice Harvest was
set in '79, I was hoping for a bit more to come out of that.
Not necessarily dumb jokes about leisure suits or wah-wah
guitar, but by the time I finished the book I'd forgotten
that it was set in the late '70s. This is minor and I only
note this because I love books like The Sweet Forever where
certain period details are essential to the story.
Chasing the Dragon by Domenic Stansberry - I picked this one
up because I recognized Stansberry's from previous posts
here. I need to read more by him as I really liked this one.
He does a great job with characters and atmosphere.
