Bill: Glad to hear you like this series. I love these books
and think they are under praised in the P. I. genre. For the
book with Bertha in her biggest role, try Bats Fly at Dusk or
Cats Prowl at Night. Fair (Gardner) recognized that during
WWII he had to have Donald serving, so Bertha is on her own
for these two cases. However, Fair gets Donald in the action
through letters and a leave! Oddly, the reprint has Donald on
vacation rather then in the service, which is which books
should never be allowed to be revised.
