More to the point, so did Archer. I hope I'm not being defensive about this, but it was the image of Archer having stuck himself with administering this pompous bit of academic self-indulgence that struck me as funny, and not just because Archer was the hardboiled dick, but also because, having read Nolan, I was aware of Miller's issues with academia.

I overstated by saying he was a failed academic. He did teach, and Nolan suggests he was a decent instructor. Further, writing was his first career choice. But he didn't get the respect he deserved from academic administrators largely because he was a genre writer, according to Nolan.
