"Hell with the turtledoves and partridges in a pear tree.
Anybody turn up any new (or old) hardboiled or noir over the
holidays?"
Most of my gifts were movies this year. Along with a bunch of
samurai films (I've really gotten hooked), I got that film
noir box with Asphalt Jungle, Set Up, Gun Crazy, Out of the
Past and Murder My Sweet. Looking forward to seeing those
again, Set Up for the first time. I also got the Prisoner box
set.
As for recent reads, I'm currently about half way through
Hard As Nails by Dan Simmons. I really like this series, but
I must admit the plots don't stay with me very long. It's one
of the few times I am glad for the many recaps from past
books in the series. I also got a laugh out of Kurtz's
alleged father, an in-joke Bill D posted a while ago.
Before that I read Richard Stark's Nobody Runs Forever, which
I enjoyed, but with the reservations I posted earlier. And
Andrew Klavan's Dynamite Road. I liked that quite a bit and
will definitely be picking up the second when it comes out in
paper. Like Bill C, I particularly liked the choice of
narrator, a now older writer recounting his early, starry
eyed days working in a PI office.
