I read THREE TO KILL (1976), by Jean-Patrick Manchette (the
City Lights edition, 2002, translated by Donald
Nicholson-Smith). Man, is it good. It's short, you can easily
read it in an evening, and once you start you won't want to
stop.
It reminded me of the Flitcraft episode in THE MALTESE
FALCON, which we were just talking about. A guy is out at the
beach with his family one day, trying to enjoy his holidays,
and two guys come up out of nowhere and try to drown him. He
fights them off. He has no idea why they attacked him. This
is more than just a beam falling: someone wants to murder
him.
He doesn't move away and start up a similar life, but the way
he's knocked out of his normal life struck a chord. I highly
recommend the book, as have all the other rare birds who've
read it. The final couple of pages are very powerful. A hell
of a book. I wish someone would translate more of Manchette's
work into English.
