I was just reading Larry Brown's obit. His books sound

past. So, what book should I start with?

I've only read JOE, but I liked it a lot. It has a dark
wicked feel to it, like Pinckney Benedict's DOGS OF GOD. And
it struck me as being layered, with a purposeful significance
beyond just the story, the kind of writing often referred to
as literary.
FAY is something like a sequel to JOE. I've got it but
haven't read it yet.
