Chandlerites (?) might be interested (or dismayed) by Sue Grafton's new R is for Ricochett, due out next month. Her first chapter is a homage to the classic first chapter of Chandler's The Big Sleep. The detective is called out to the millionaire's home. The millionaire is paralyzed. The detective had a daughter (only one) who is a "wild'un." The millionaire asks the detective to babysit the daughter -- who is getting out of prison tomorrow morning.

GUYANA: WHISTLE-BLOWER IS SHOT DEAD George Bacchus, 51, a cattle farmer who had prompted an inquiry into a possible government hit squad, was shot to death on Thursday, Deputy Police Chief Henry Green said. Mr. Bacchus said on television earlier this year that a government-sponsored hit squad had been formed to hunt down criminals, and that his brother had been killed in a drive-by shooting meant for him. The government agreed to an inquiry but disagreement over panel members has stalled progress. (AP) Published: June 25, 2004
