RARA-AVIS: Dashiell Hammett

I was reading the review of Hammett's Crime Stories & Other Writings found at http://www.blackmaskmagazine.com/bmcr_11.html and am left a bit puzzled by this statement:

"Not counting the eight linked novelettes which make up his first two novels Red Harvest and The Dain Curse, Hammett wrote 28 stories of the Op."

Does that mean that both RH and TDC were serialized?

Pardon the question if it seems a bit daft, as I'm not really all that familiar with this sort of thing.
