I'm not entirely sure what a "true mystery" is, Jack, but if
it involves clues and detection then criminal-protagonist
noir/hardboiled novels (crime novels, for short) often have
no mystery element at all (which is why Elmore Leonard
objects so strongly to being called a mystery writer).
