RARA-AVIS: RE: San Francisco bookstores?

Mike,

Here are four (actually five+) to consider.

1) Green Apple Books - http://www.greenapplebooks.com

This is probably the best general used bookstore in the city. It regularly wins the "best bookstore in the city" designation from the local weeklies. They also happen to have purchased Joe Gore's personal library, so there are a lot of signed firsts from his pals available for sale.

2) San Francisco Mystery Bookstore - http://www.sfmysterybooks.com/

The only pure mystery bookstore in the city. They've got a great collection of used mystery books, although not quite as strong a hard boiled orientation as when Bruce Tailor ran the store. (Say, check out the recommended book list here for an interesting title or two.)

3) Dog Eared Books/Phoenix Books - http://www.dogearedbooks.com/

This is a pair of used bookstores in the Noe Valley/Mission District area. They are close to the San Francisco Mystery Bookstore and they have a nice map on their web site of all the new and used bookstores in the area. There are a lot! There's also a big Goodwill Store in the area if you're interested in doing a little book scouting for cheap finds.

4) Acorn Books - http://www.acornbooks.com

A nice general used bookstore with a strong mystery section and a nice collection of mystery firsts.

Have fun!

Mark
