one reason might be explained in the essay he wrote about killing off Van der Valk. Freeling no longer lived in Amsterdam-- he could not "smell and feel" the atmosphere, and he was afraid that Van der Valk would become a cardboard character. A short story might not be as demanding, then, as a novel.
