In this instance, it's about choice. We have the freedom to choose. Refusing to choose is itself a choice. Whether or not to shoot somebody is a choice we can all make. Thus, with that choice comes responsibility. And with responsibility comes dread and anguish. Or noir. At least, that's my understanding.
