Jake Gittes in CHINATOWN may not have slipped up morally, but
he's nonetheless caught up in a noirish nightmare. Certainly
that ending is as dark as it gets. Gittes may not himself be
doomed, but he's helpless to save those he cares about, or
even bring the guilty to justice.
