"Professionalism," at least in the sense that I meant it, isn't a religion or a talisman. It's a way of making a living.

All I meant is that, as a GENERAL tendency, you're less likely to meet either amateur detectives or amateur criminals in a hard-boiled mystery than you are in a "traditional" ("cozy," "teacake," call it what you like) mystery.
