I have been following the thread closely and, with all due
respect to Todd's secular/existential damnation and Bill's
suggestion of a specific noir style, I have seen nothing that
convinces me that there is something that bars Shakespeare,
Conrad, or Dostoyevsky from the club. For now my conclusion
is that we are, as Mario suggested, simply and arbitrarily
limiting the noir scope to beginning with post-1920s crime
fiction. That's fine with me, of course.
