I'd like to thank Mario for reading and reviewing In His Shadow. I also want to share a mostly unsolicited blurb that I recently received from Jeff Gelb, coeditor of Warner Books Flesh and Blood anthologies:

"In His Shadow is a wild ride on the darkest noir side of the street. Zeltserman has updated Jim Thompson themes of character and situation to forge a private eye novel where everything that can go wrong, does...with highly entertaining, if very grim results."

The yahoo group AllAboutMurder has a series where they post the first three chapters of a book - one chapter per week. They'd like to start posting the first three chapters of In His Shadow starting next week and I told them okay. My goal all along with this book is to move it to a traditional publisher. If anyone has any ideas whether posting the first three chapters on the web could interfere with that, could you please contact me offline?

Thanks, Dave Zeltserman

Mario's review was educational in another way for me. I never knew that neo-noir started with Willeford's WOMAN CHASER. I've got it on the shelf, but haven't read it. Pretty impressive for such a skinny little book to start a new genre.

WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILER FOR SOLOMON'S VINEYARD FOLLOWS

I had to laugh when I read the review, though. It's really hard to read the genre without dredging up other writers, and Mario recalls Chandler, Goodis (I think), and Jim Thompson when he's doing the review. I had to laugh because I had just finished Latimer's SOLOMON'S VINEYARD, and I found myself saying, "Hmm... violent sex. Hey! James Cain. Whoa! Violent sex after murder! More Cain! And wait a minute, the detective is playing the crooked cop against the criminals... RED HARVEST!" Hahaha. Gotta love it.
