RARA-AVIS: police procedural

miker, I was just wondering something similar. I just read James W. Hall's Body Language, whose (not all that convincingly female) protagonist is a police department evidence technician/photographer. Does that count? There are some seemingly realistic descriptions of her work before the story veers off into femjep/serial rapist-murderer/thriller-land. (I correctly ID'd the bad guy at first appearance, but the writing was good enough that I read it to the end to make sure I was right.)

Joy, who'd better stop goofing off and get to work
