The following is from the intro to O'Brien's list of hb books: "... I have thrown into the mix a variety of dissimilar works, naturalistic novels, political novels, spy thrillers, conventional whodunits: all those books that seem to orbit near ... the hardboiled novel. My purpose has been simply to locate the books in their chronological landscape so that new relationships among them can be perceived."
