RARA-AVIS: The Case for Raymond Chandler

William Denton sent us to Allen Barr's excellent article about Raymond Chandler at:

http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2002/07/31/chandler/print.html

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything in print or on the net where someone has called Chandler a hack and an imitator.

If we want to say he imitated Hammett, OK, but so what.

Hammett may have hacked out some work in his early days, but many of his Phillip Marlowe novels are classics worthy to be called literature.
