Yes, and there's also something nonconformist about hardboiled. Not anticonformist--doing the opposite of what you're supposed to be doing--but just doing what you think is right for you to do, regardless of what everyone else is doing, wanting, saying. New Age types might say centered.
    BTW, this list has mentioned Atticus Kodiak, and I picked up _Shooting at Midnight._ I liked it and the protagonist, Bridgett Logan--definitely hardboiled--but apparently this book is sort of a stand-alone. The usual series protagonist, Atticus, comes across as a total dud in this book. Is he always so dull and bourgeois?
