Aha, thanks. That led me to his other YA novel, THE SHIP THAT NEVER WAS
(1982). A library web site has this summary of the first one: "A man and his 12-year-old son lose all hope of finding a sunken treasure in the Caribbean. Then one day a strange thing happens to the sea."
