For Sci-Fi I would also recommend _A Scanner Darkly_ by Dick.

When Gravity Fails - George Alec Effinger is a good cyberpunk pi novel.

Only Forward - Michael Marshall Smith starts out like a straight forward detective novel for the first third then gets pretty heavy into the Sci-Fi

For westerns I would recommend some newer ones like:

In the Rogue Blood - James Carlos Blake Wildwood Boys - James Carlos Blake Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy All The Pretty Horses also by McCarthy, although the first in a trilogy it is a self contained book.

For HB science fiction, a few favorites come to mind: Philip K. Dick _A Scanner Darkly_
