I should add that, thanks to Cal Branche (of this list), I am now in touch with the UF-Gainsville library, and plan to visit the JDM Collection there in early April. They have an "early manuscript" of DEEP BLUE, which may demonstrate that JDM intentionally incorporated the doppleganger (I think he did anyway, but the manuscript may help prove it). In fact, it appears that parts of the collection have not been cataloged, so who knows what riches I might uncover?
