If I recall correctly, Boston was the scene of one of the
biggest "busing" battles back in the 70s (I think Lehane
mentions this in one of his books). For those not familiar
with the term, busing refers to evening up the racial balance
in schools by taking black students and sending them outside
their district to predominantly white schools (and, I think,
vice versa). Not really a good solution but I'm not qualified
to judge how well it works.
Not to go off on a rant, but desegregation hasn't worked that
well here in Shreveport, Louisiana. The predominantly white
schools are some of the best in the state, but the
predominantly black schools pretty much suck.
