Expand cowboy to mean western hero and he goes back to Cooper. Plus an argument could be made (actually, has been made very effectively by John Cawelti) that the private eye is in many ways the urban version of the western hero.

Okay, so you've batted down my argument about the cowboy being the most original American icon, what about the jazz man or Elvis?
