I think there are a few reasons, in addition to the earlier observations of other list subscribers.

California is newer. The fundamental corruptions in the organization of North American communities are only a few generations old, and more accessible in California, than in older, eastern cities.

Write what you learn. California is a big market for writers, drawing many from other communities around the world. In California, they are outsiders and can be detached observers.

The dream factory. It's Hollywood's version of the ideal American life that goes across the country and around the world. Some contrarians might want to reveal corruptions, obsessions, deceptions percieved lurking beneath Disneyland.

Sorry if that makes anyone's head hurt.
