I remember somebody asking a few days ago about British hb.
I've just finished and very much liked a new first book by
somebody called JJConnolly: LAYER CAKE. I have no idea where
he comes from; but the book is a very energetic London
drug-gangs story. The use of English is very lively but -- a
warning to North Americans -- also very slangy. The book is
written in the first-person, and there were passages where
even I didn't understand more than two thirds of the words,
and I live in London. BUT if you can roll with it, the
vocabulary gives you a tremendous sense of the social
setting, and the sheer energy of the story. And it's funny,
too. I liked the ending. The publishers are Duck Editions
(Duckworth). If you get a chance, have a look at it.
