R: RARA-AVIS: Erle Stanley Gardner

Hello to everybody.

"The Case of the Velvet Claws", the first Perry Mason novel, is by far the most hardboiled of all the Mason novels - if memory serves me right, there's no courtroom scenes in it, and Mason is quite a curious mix of a private detective and a tough guy. It looks like ESG hadn't still decided what to make of him. From the second Mason novel ("Lucky Legs", if I'm correct), things had changed quite a bit.

Later,

Luca Conti
