I've never quite understood the "pretentious" charge, which I've encountered before but never in a particularly coherent or creditable manner. Is it pretense to try to play with narrative form and to try to create an impressionistic style, as he does? (Successfully, in my opinion) Or does this presumed pretense lie in his approach towards history and mystery?

I, too, await your response with interest.
