Michael Chong just referred to Cast the First Stone as the
first novel by Chester Himes. The jacket copy for my old
paperback edition (which I haven't read yet) of If He Hollers
Let Him Go says that was his first novel. I seem to remember
reading somewhere that it wasn't really, that he had an
earlier one he had trouble publishing. Was that Cast the
First Stone, written earlier, published later?
While I'm on the subject of Himes, I've now read all of his
Coffin Ed and Gravedigger Jones books. What are the most
recommended of his others?
