I often feel that Bloch can get into the psychopathic mind so well (THE SCARF, PSYCHO, THE DEAD BEAT) because he knew his Lovecraft and knew how elaborate and threatening paranoid fantasy worlds can be. Like Ramsey Campbell, his characters don't kill because they're evil, they kill because they're driven to it by forces of which the rest of us are not aware.
