He missed one author, though -- Terrill Lankford. In my mind at least, his Angry Moon is a great synthesis of the two. And I generally abhor the supernatural in hardboiled; that's why I had to give up Chesbro's books and why I'm getting increasingly exasperated with Burke (may have give him up, too, though I'm not quite willing to admit it yet). Terrill, however, pulls off the balancing act with style.
