Like Paul and Bob, I'd definitely add Hammett, as well. And
once again, let me point any fans of the Coens or hardboiled
writing to Ethan's collection of short stories, THE GATES OF
EDEN. They're not all hard-boiled, not by a long shot, but
the pastiches are dead-on, in my opinion. A two-fisted,
hard-drinking, hard-boiled weights-and-measures inspector?
It's a hoot!
And the boxing story in Coen's book, and the one in Hammett's
NIGHTMARE TOWN, could almost be soulmates.
