Joel & Ethan Coen have cited Dashiell Hammet as an
influence on Miller's Crossing, and Chandler's The Long
Goodbye on The Big Lebowski. I think it would be safe to
assume James M Cain influenced Blood Simple.
There is a new book about the Coen Brothers out next month,
by John Ashbrook and Ellen Cheshire, as part of the Pocket
Essentials series
(www.pocketessentials.com) which goes into detail about the
influences.
