RARA-AVIS: RE: Callan

As far as I remember Callan was actually a series on British TV in the late 60s - a bit before my time and not often repeated. I remember it being fairly seedy and there was a marvellous character who I think was Callan's snitch called Lonely. Edward Woodward was indeed the title character and the only reason I know any of this is that about 20 years ago I had a babysitter who was an old actress with a smelly dog who claimed to have played Callan's landlady in the series. The IMDB also lists a film from 1974 based on Mitchell's book but it is unclear whether this was cobbled together from old episodes or something new.
