This is always true. Just about all of Willeford's pre-Hoke characters are the same sociopath -- exceptions are "Pick-up" and "Cockfighter." It shows you how twisted Willeford was, that he thought all these guys were funny.

I've posted this before, but to me, Hoke is the greatest character in all HB -- truly eccentric and quirky, a slob on the surface who's constantly being underestimated. When you see how many characters are just rehashes of Marlowe,
(the list is endless, even today) Hoke becomes that much more special. I just wish there were more books with him.
