By contrast, I have read every Willeford book the same day I
got it. This guy must have been the most compelling writer in
the entire genre. Nobody writes like him.

-- Willeford is (was) a hoot!!! I find his plots to be so out there and inconceivable, but at the same time, he pulls them off with great mastery. Wild Wives was the first thing I read of him, and it was so nuts...I'd dare say that he was parodying the genre, but so what.
