Could it be we're taking Ellroy too much at face value? I saw
Ellroy read once and immediately got the impression not to
take anything he says too seriously. Although he had a
singular presence, he wasn't bizarre as much as playing
bizarre. An act. (It was in Hollywood, of course) Playing up
his demon dog image.
