RARA-AVIS: Women Writing Pulps?

Bill Hagen (billha@ionet.net)
Fri, 2 Apr 1999 23:14:29 -0600 (CST) I recently posted a speculation that Dorothy B. Hughes, in 1942 (_The
Fallen Sparrow_), may have been the first woman to publish a novel with
noir elements. No one suggested another, which I take as a good sign (uh,
so far), since I know some of you have read deeply in the early stuff.

Let me bother you with another question. Does anyone know of any women
publishing in the pulps--Black Mask, etc.--before 1940? (Perhaps someone
publishing under a male name?) If I don't hear a thing, I will again take
it as a probable negative--until I can get to a major research library.

Thanks.
