Re: RARA-AVIS: Sean McGrady/Ken Nunn

Mon, 16 Nov 1998 10:11:26 -0800 A couple people were posting about Kem Nunn, who's one of my favorite
authors. As Mr. Lau said, "Tappin' The Source" is one of the ultimate
So. Cal. surfing books. It's truly a modern classic. After you read it,
you'll never feel the same way about Huntington Beach again ...

"Unassigned Territory" was a complete mystery to me. A sort of perverse
combination of "Serenade" and "Wise Blood." Unfortunately, I found it to
be a bit prolix for my taste.

Nunn, as a Calif. native, can really write about the terrain. "Pomona
Queen," (described on the jacket as the "long night of the soul of a
vaccuum cleaner salesman) paints a portrait the idyllic farmland that
exists underneath all the decadence and sprawl in the Pomona Valley. A
strange, yet strangely moving, book.

I loved "The Dogs Of Winter," which is a Northern California, surf-based
"Heart Of Darkness." There's some fantastic plotting and atmosphere in
it, I was very impressed. I thought it would make a great movie, but as
of now it remains unsold to Hollywood. Something about "unsympathetic
characters." Go figure. Read it for yourself.

BTW, Kem Nunn is tight with John McNaughton, of "Henry:Portrait of a
Serial Killer," fame. "Pomona Queen" is one of his projects. Nunn also
did an uncredited rewrite on "Wild Things," the director's most recent
picture.
