while not really hardboiled, in fact difficult to pigeonhole,
Kem (not Ken)
Nunn is a well respected chronicler of Southern California
sub-cultures and
amusing yarn-spinner. in particular, his TAPPING THE SOURCE
is considered a
definitive work on surfers. also read POMONA QUEEN a few
years back and found
it immensely enjoyable and perhaps of interest to those on
the list. the
blurb on the back of UNASSIGNED TERRITORY, which is stacked
up in the
flightpath of my personal airport does sound rara-avisish as
well. I quote:
>Obadiah Wheeler is a young man losing his grip on his
>fundamentalist faith
and his entire world. Heading into the >Mojave Desert with
a carload of his
fellow sect members, he >soon loses his way and begins a
wild chase across a
>dangerous wasteland accompanied by a pretty girl on
the run, >a possible
extraterrestrial relic called "the Thing," and a >desire
to discover a
different truth- one that will lead him >into temptation,
mortal sin, and even
murder.
if I would compare him to anyone, T. Coraghesson Boyle comes
to mind, but
don't expect me to quantify this with any concrete examples.
it's just a
feeling.
