RARA-AVIS: Edward Bulwar-Lytton Prize

Thu, 12 Nov 1998 23:23:16 -0500 (EST) A friend forwarded a list of winners of the Edward Bulwar-Lytton Prize,
which is awarded every year for the worst possible opening line of a
book (I'm not sure if that means they are the beginnings of real books,
or humorous attempts to write bad opening lines). I thought one entry
might interest people on this list:

"Mike Hardware was the kind of private eye who didn't know the meaning
of the word "fear," a man who could laugh in the face of danger and spit
in the eye of death--in short, a moron with suicidal tendencies."

So, anyone know if this is a real opening line?

Mark
