RARA-AVIS: Tips on NOT schleping....

Wed, 28 Oct 1998 21:03:17 EST th idea of schleping books 'home' is quite silly...
go to any country where you want to buy books...buy them...then go to the post
office and buy some of their folding boxes (or get any box for that
matter...as long as you respect the shipping weight) and then go to the
harware store and buy some large tape...put the books in the box and....mail
them to yourself...please make sure that you write either "books" and/or
"printed matter" on the box in big letters...then make sure the post office
gives you the "books" or "printed Matter" rate which is abominably low
it will take four to five weeks for your books to get home (either way accross
the atlantic is abot the same)...but they always get there...i am a living
testimony of that for close to 25 years between france and the US...it ALWAYS
works...i just got today two more of the six boxes i mailed myself to myself
from several places in france during my yearly vacation there...it is very
cheap (the book rate) and you don't have to carry the damn things...and you
might even sneak the old can of cassoulet inthe package...and they would NEVER
know...
mind you i've done it from france, holland, belgium, italy and uk to the us
and the reverse is also completely true since friends or family in europe ask
me for books sometimes...even did it from Brazil to US the times i was
there...
make sure you write books (in english) next to the language of origin (Livres
for france, for example)
