I couldn't agree more. One of the reasons genres die is that
they
implode. They become parodies of themselves.
As an example, all the frenzied imitations of Donald
Westlake
really damaged the caper. These days if you call a book a
caper,
you'll have a hard time selling it.
But if you look at Hiaasen, Leonard, and newer writers
like
Shames you see the caper is alive and well, looking a
little
different, and called by another name, but there's no
mistaking the
Westlake lineage.
