I think of most of these guys as literary descendants of Chester Himes,
and for my money, there are few who are any harder-boiled than he is at
his best. Read The Real Cool Killers or The Crazy Kill or All Shot Up
and see what I mean. The Holloway House authors aren't as skilled with
language as Himes is, but they're writing about the same things with the
same level of energy, bitterness, and violence.
