RARA-AVIS: Joyce Carol Oates

DOUGLAS GREENE (dgreene@odu.edu)
Tue, 13 Oct 1998 09:52:22 EST Whether or not Joyce Carol Oates likes Cain and Chandler, she is an
interesting writer, whose attitude is indeed often ambiguous. My
problem with her is that sometimes the viewpoint, and occasionally
the writing, is obscure, but she does produce very noir
pieces---including an interesting short story in which the arrival of
the police on the murder scene is told from the viewpoint of the
corpse. Her supernatural Gothic tales can be compelling, and
(unexpectedly?) she is a fan of H. P. Lovecraft.

(Incidentally, I agree with her about Cain, and disagree about
Chandler.)
