A smoker was usually a private gathering of men -- normally portrayed as
bigwigs, movers and shakers -- to watch a boxing match. Sometimes these
were amateur boxers. The term "smoker" comes from most of the attendees
smoking big fat cigars. Ralph Ellison describes a smoker in an early
chapter of INVISIBLE MAN.
