Fred,
I also like Philip Kerr's Berlin Noir trilogy quite a bit. But
I
thought his A Philosophical Investigation was even better. Set
slightly
in the future (when the government has DNA files as
comprehensive, but
not complete, as today's fingerprint files), this is a cat and
mouse
thriller between a serial killer and the female cop who is
trying to
catch him. As with the Berlin Noir books, Kerr is especially
good in
his characterization. I've also read his Dead Meat, set in the
USSR,
and have a copy of Grid (originally Gridiron in the UK, but I
guess they
thought we Yanks would think it was about football) about
an
artificially intelligent building that turns against its
occupants.
I've been meaning to get to it and its successors. As you can
see, Kerr
has quite a range in his subjects, all obviously very
well-researched.
Mark
