Because they don't follow the same code...except in very general terms.
It's not a mathematical formula. But the point is that they both follow
their own personal code, just as, say, Mike Hammer does, or the Continental
Op. In their own way, they are all "men of honour..." I'd quote Chandler's
The Simple Art of Murder again, but the book's way over there....
